A Florida man convicted of taping a puppy’s mouth closed and leaving the creature dehydrated and malnourished was sentenced to five decades of probation Monday.
Animal control officials found that the stray Florida Cur last month at a neighborhood of Lehigh Acres, a neighborhood approximately 17 miles (27 km ) east of Fort Myers.
The puppy was in respiratory distress and has been limping with a bleeding wound on its leg. An officer cut the tape off the dog’s snout and gave water. Rescuers called the puppy Chance.
A crime scene tech gathered the tape which was about Chance’s mouth, and ideas in the neighborhood led researchers to Thompson, officials said. Forensic testing afterward matched Thompson’s fingerprints and DNA into the cassette removed from the puppy’s mouth.
Following the dog’s healing, Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno embraced and deputized Chance. The puppy is currently a part of the sheriff office Community Relations Bureau.
