Hackers targeted around 130 accounts this week,” States Twitter in Most Recent Announcement

Unidentified hackers jumped into the Twitter account of technologies moguls, politicians, actors, and important businesses on Wednesday in a clear Bitcoin scam.

The ruse comprised bogus tweets from prior president Barack Obama, Democratic Party front-runner Joe Biden, Mike Bloomberg plus quite a few tech billionaires, such as Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Stars Kanye West and his wife, Kim Kardashian West, were hacked.

“According to what we know at the moment, we think roughly 130 accounts were targeted with the attackers somehow as a portion of the episode,” the firm said in an announcement.

“For a small subset of those reports, the attackers could acquire control of the account and send Tweets from these accounts.”

The social networking giant said it was ongoing to check if the attackers could get private information on their targeted accounts.

The imitation tweets said individuals had 30 minutes to ship $1,000 ($875) from the cryptocurrency to anonymous Bitcoin email addresses and could get double the sum in return.

The accounts received nearly 12.9 bitcoins, a sum now valued at slightly more than $116,000 (over $100,000).

The FBI’s San Francisco branch is leading an investigation into the hack.

Twitter also stated in the announcement it had been taking”aggressive steps” to secure its systems.

“We are still in the process of analyzing longer-term measures we can take and will discuss additional information when we could.”
