MSU Students Fast To Raise Awareness

Over 130 MSU students scratched their normal Friday night plans in order to raise money for a good cause. News 12's Jennifer Hudspeth found that instead of going out to eat with friends, they decided to stay on campus and there was nothing on the menu. Some were still sleeping, but other had their eyes glued to the clock. Arielle Hruska says, "I'm very hungry right now, I'm ready for food." 9:00 this morning marked the end of a commitment.A commitment to not eat for 25 hours in order to raise awareness about hunger and homelessness. Arielle Hruska hoped that everyone involved learned a very important lesson. Arielle Hruska says, "It's a very hidden thing, I don't think a lot of people know that. I think that after today everyone realizes that there are people who need help, and people are more willing to help... that's just what I wanted." She, along with the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and Campus Kitchen hosted the event hoping it would be an eye opener for students to know what it feels like to be hungry.... And it worked. Katie Hutton says, "I just learned that there is hunger, and it is everywhere and we need to be aware of it and really stand up and take part in helping other's when we can." And these students did help. They raised over 3,000 dollars for Campus Kitchen who will make meals to be delivered to families around the area. Arielle says, "I think it was a big success, everyone seemed to have a really good time, I mean it went really smoothly, we raised a lot of money so I think we did a really good thing." And their reward after not eating for over a day.... Pizza! Arielle says, "I feel a lot better that I've eaten now..."While almost everyone left with a full stomach, many also left with a new understanding. Katie says, "It was a really good experience overall." An experience they won't soon forget...In Mankato, Jennifer Hudspeth News 12.
