Fairmont Students Learn About Local Job Opportunities

Most sophomores in high school have their mind on homework and activities. But today the focus was on their career at the "Area Career Exploration." Businesses at Fairmont Junior and Senior High used a unique approach to help students think a few years down the road. Yes, he is beat-boxing. Who knew exploring careers could be so entertaining? That was part of a game show for sophomores to give them idea of what jobs are available in the Fairmont area. Bob Wallace says, "It's all about planning them for future careers, it's all about letting them know of the opportunities in this area."Through a game show and a career expo, 125 businesses in a 35 mile radius of Fairmont, and about 375 students came together with one goal in mind. Garey Ferguson says, "Let them know what opportunities we have so that whatever point in time they decide to come back to a wonderful place to raise their family or look for a job we want them to come back to our area here."An area that according to organizers sees about 80% of students leave after they graduate. Some students say today just might change some of those numbers.Trey Schultz says, "I thought maybe I would have to go a lot further, maybe into the cities for some of the jobs I've been looking at but it's nice to know ther eare jobs at home because this is where I would like to stay and live."Bryan Piatt says, "One of the things that event organizers are really excited about is this resource guide. Every student will leave with one and has links inside to help them explore careers. "So as students answer questions about those career, local businesses hope the day answers the question of who will operate things in the future.Lynn Manske says,"We grow great students here and we need them as part of our workforce here in Greater, MN".
