MSU's Aviation Future Up In The Air

Possible budget cuts at MSU have many worrying about the programs the university will offer. But city leaders fear the elimination of the aviation program could mean a big hit to Mankato's pocketbook.Fox Mankato's Ryan Gustafson has the story.D-Day will come in March, when Minnesota State University-Mankato makes its final decisions on the school curriculum. There is talk of reduction and even elimination of certain programs, but one program in particular is drawing extra attention from the city of Mankato.Patrick Hentges says, "It certainly would be reduced, slightly, the impact of the airport with the elimination of the flight school. So it does have an impact on the local economy - at least to 2.5 million dollars a year."Hentges and the city have drawn up a letter urging MSU President Richard Davenport to spare any cuts to the school's aviation program. They cite the school's investment in the airport itself, and the economic impact the school has MSU, Mankato, and local businesses.Mike Laven says, "We're turning over those same dollars two or three times with the students, the university, Northstar Aviation and it circles around the community again and again before it every actually leaves - the state gets their cut, so to speak. It's a good return on our investment"Leaders of the aviation program are confident that the administration will re-evaluate their program as something to keep with the recent uptick in enrollment. But the city is throwing their support behind the school as well.Hentges says, "It's very significant. Those inplanements, those take offs and landings and the activity at the airport is a major financial component to the airport."In Mankato, Ryan Gustafson, The Fox Mankato News At Nine.
