Mankato City Council Proposes Utility Changes

If passed a new ordinance could change utility and billing operations for the city of Mankato.The city is considering discontinuing utility shut off's in exchange for late fees.Instead of turning off utilities after three months a late fee of five dollars would be charged.Mankato is proposing the system to further cover staff costs associated with late payments.Assistant to the City Manager Tanya Ange says, "So the savings would come in from the staff time related to shut offs, that savings is around 100,000 dollars per year."To encourage payment on time, the city is also considering a monthly two dollar incentive when using electronic payment... as well as a one dollar incentive when using paperless billing.The Mankato City Council Meeting begins at 7 pm tomorrow in the Minnesota Room of the Intergovernmental Center.
