In his 2010 spending plan, President Obama outlined taking the money paid back in the bank bailout and giving it to community banks for small business lending. And, although the number...30-billion dollars...seems big, News 12s Lisa Cownie talked to local bankers who say in the grand scheme of things that's just a drop in the bucket...Coming soon...30-billion dollars...it's an effort to make sure more signs like this start popping up...Laura Dhuvetter hopes to open the doors on this candy shop in North Mankato by March...it's taken longer than she thought.Laura Dhuvetter says,"It's a little bit frustrating. I started this process in the summer. Banks are conservative though, even more so in this economy."President Obama is hoping to loosen the purse strings a bit for community banks by lending them billions so they in turn can lend to small businessesLisa Cownie says, "but there are 8,000 community banks in the country with 50,000 locations...so that 30-billion turns out to be a small number after all...Bruce Gratz says, "Do the math on that, it's only a million a bank, and to start up a small business takes in excess of a million."But Gratz says, maybe the president's words will act as a motivator...Gratz says, "The economy isn't any different than a business, which isn't any different than a sports team...it needs momentum to be successful and without everyone cheering it on..well, right now people are hesitant to do that. Anything we can do to get it going is helpful."And Gratz says programs already in place for small business lending shouldn't be overlooked...and in fact are helping with an increasing number of applications..."We've seen a little different approach to new business, probably because a lot of people out there are looking for work and maybe now is that time to start something up."It's the right time for DhuvetterDhuvetter says, " I see it as an opportunity for me. There are things you can take advantage of in a bad economy...there's been cheap equipment I've been able to pick up and different things I can take advantage of."Good news for the 10 people she's hired... a good start in a community this size, where its hopeful more people will take advantage of the opportunities this economy has to offer.Lisa Cownie, News 12
