In Health Watch:It's estimated that between 6 and 12 million kids are affected by head lice each year.Now a new study finds a safe new treatment could help kill lice faster.Janet Choi reports.Bennett and Sophie Orenstein came home from school one day with a problem that had everyone scratching their heads.Sophie: 'itchy scratchy.'Bennett: 'itchy.They had brought home head lice from school -- and their mom Stephanie had it too.Stephanie Kaster says, 'Turned out Bennett was the carrier, he had over 500 eggs in his head.'Every year millions of parents have to deal with the itching - and the embarrassment of lice.But a new FDA - approved treatment is safe and *very* effective at killing the tiny bugs , according to a new study.Dr. Gabrielle Gold-Von Simson says, 'The success rate after one week of treatment is very high at 91%.. which is not seen with the more conventional treatments.The prescription medication -- called Ulesfia -- uses benzyl alcohol lotion.It works by suffocating the lice - instead of killing them with pesticides, like some other products.Dr. Gold-Von Simson says, 'A need for new treatments have come about because of the really high rate of resistance with the more conventional over the counter treatments.'Treatment is only one part of the battle. Parents still have go through their child's hair with a comb like this -- and they need to do head checks until the infestation is gone.Getting rid of lice on stuffed animals, clothes, and bedding is also key.Preventing lice isn't easy,Stephanie Kaster says, 'It's a life lesson, you're going to get through it, it's going to be fine and it's not the end of the world.'This mom's advice: stay on top of the problem and try to stay calm.The study also found that medication was safe and effective in children as young as six months old.
