The Day in Medicine

Having a hard time hearing these days? It could have something to do with that over the counter medicine you take...Michelle Gielan has that story and more in today's health watch report.Loud noise isn't the only thing that can hurt your ears -- new research suggests over-the-counter PAINKILLERS can do the same.Researchers found men -- younger than age 50 -- who took ACETAMINOPHEN more than two times a week were twice as likely to suffer hearing loss. Those who took IBUPROFEN at least twice a week had a nearly two-thirds greater chance of having hearing loss.Still - researchers insist the OVERALL risk is very small -- just 1 percent per year.Researchers are making more progress in the fight against AIDS.They've discovered that the virus that causes AIDS can hide in the bone marrow and escape drugs, then emerge later in blood cells. If scientists can find exactly where the virus hides, it could lead to new drugs that patients won't have take for the rest of their lives.Breast-feeding may help moms stay thinner later in life.A new report found middle-age women who consistently breast-fed their children, had waists that were roughly two and half inches smaller than women who had never breast-fed.Previous research has found breast-feeding may also lower a woman's risk for ovarian and breast cancer. Those are some of today's top medical stories.I'm Michelle Gielan - CBS News - New York.
