Mankato area leaders travel to Cuba with MARL

Eight Participants from the Mankato area recently travelled to Cuba as part of the Minnesota Agriculture and Rural Leadership Program. The goal of the trip was to expand Ag imports to that country and to better understand the needs and wants of the Cuban customer. The group also got a chance to observe the differences in farming in Cuba.In 2008 100 million dollars worth of agricultural product was exported to Cuba from Minnesota... including corn and grain. One thing they want, but don't get is something area farmers have plenty of...Pork.Gary Lager says, ''I'm convinced that there's a market that we could potentially improve or enhance by what we could do down there.''The house agricultural committee recently introduced legislation to make the sale of agricultural products to Cuba easier.A hearing on the bill will be held tomorrow.
