Researchers make bold statements about the benefits of breast feedingMichelle Gielan has that story and more in today's health watch report.A new study shows the lives of hundreds of babies would be saved if more women breast fed.Researchers estimate nearly 900 babies would be saved along with billions of dollars.. if 90 percent of U-S women breast fed their babies for the first six months of life.Breast milk contains antibodies that help babies fight infection. The analysis published in the journal Pediatrics suggests there are hundreds of infant deaths and costly illnesses from health problems that breast feeding may help prevent.U-S health officials say it's too soon to determine whether tens of thousands of doses of the H1N1 vaccine will go to waste. As many as 91 million doses have been administered.. but millions more will start expiring by the end of June. The C-D-C say it is still a good idea for people to get vaccinated. And a new study offers some hope for severely obese teens.Researchers say a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet can be a safe and effective way to lose weight under close medical supervision.Doctors had been concerned the diet could have a negative effect on growth and cholesterol levels.. but young people in the study lost weight without experiencing those problems. Those are some of the day's top medical stories.I'm Michelle Gielan, CBS News, New York.
