With Prom just a day away, Fairmont High School is using a unique approach to get a message to teens.News 12's Jennifer Hudspeth shows us how teachers are acting as human billboards to show students they care.Mr. Hernes isn't usually decked out in neon green when in front of the classroom..."Not typically, it's not my color no..."Today Hernes and other teachers at Fairmont High are making quite the fashion statement, just in time for prom.Hernes says, "I think it's cool, it's caused a lot of kids to ask hey what's up with that and so it gives us a good chance to talk about wearing seatbelts and making good choices this weekend and really all the time."The Buckle Up For Prom and Mom logo is catchy and even teens like Sarah Vanasse are jumping on the brightly colored bandwagon."When they're distracted by their pretty dresses and doing their hair, I'm their little reminder another important thing is to buckle up."It's causing kids to pay attention... exactly the point as they prepare for the big dance.Jaime Bleess says, "If we just get on the loudspeaker and say please buckle up or if the police officer is the only one saying it, we're not going to reach as many kids...but these teachers care about kids , kids care about their teachers and if they see teachers taking that extra time to wear a brightly colored, ridiculous shirt, kids are going to remember that."Jennifer Hudspeth says, "Not only are teens getting coached in the classroom but students get reminders every time they walk thru school doors."Bleess says, "They're predominantly placed right by the exits and so literally the last message these kids are getting when they walk out the door from school is buckle up."A message meant to keep students safe behind the wheel.Bleess says, "We want them to make memories and be ready to tell us about Monday when they are here in school."In Fairmont, Jennifer Hudspeth News 12.
