The planet is confronting a climate catastrophe – and the point of no return is hurtling towards us.
Speaking on the eve of this COP25 climate summit, he is calling on world leaders to take tangible actions to face the issue:
“What’s still lacking is political will, political will to place a cost on carbon, political will to prevent subsidies on fossil fuels, political will to quit construction coal power plants from 2020 onwards, political will shift taxation from carbon, taxing pollution rather than individuals.”
“Time to prevent drilling”
It is time to”stop digging and drilling and take advantage of renewable power and nature-based solutions,” Guterres told reporters.
“But let us be clear, till today our attempts to accomplish those goals are completely inadequate. The commitments made in Paris would nevertheless result in a rise in temperatures over three degrees Celsius, but a lot of nations are not even fulfilling those obligations.”
World leaders will be gathering in Madrid this week to forge ahead with efforts to suppress global temperature climbs as areas on each continent are undergoing extreme weather, such as wildfires and floods.
Spain is hosting the case following Chile’s cancellation because of unrest in the nation. Chile remains presiding over the seminar and also will lead the discussions.
