A former NATO spokesperson Claims That the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s Trip to North Macedonia is a Significant Indication of re-engagement Together with the Balkans.
Since ratifying its name-change after a public referendum, the Republic of North Macedonia was invited to join NATO and now has significantly more realistic ambitions to finally join the European Union. Both possibilities were obstructed by a dispute with Greece regarding the title of this little nation.
Professor Shea stated All the recent improvements, such as Pompeo’s trip, were optimistic:
“The title change was a fantastic indication that even the most intractable issues in the Balkans could be solved with motivated political direction and help of the global community. Additionally, it is a fantastic indication for areas like Kosovo that has a challenging relationship with Serbia.
“Pompeo’s trip is an indication of US re-engagement; Russia attempted to intervene in the referendum North Macedonia held on NATO membership, which passed overwhelmingly and in the current election campaign to attempt polarise the ruling.
“This was a wake-up call which the area wasn’t just falling to the west lap. Therefore the US must demonstrate that it is interested, it stinks, that it is back in the match.”
