Margaret Atwood’s”The Testaments” and Bernardine Evaristo’s”Girl, Woman, Other” collectively won the Booker Prize on Monday in a surprise double award where the literary prize recognized its earliest and first black lady winners.
The writers will divide the 50,000 lbs ($62,800) annual trophy, the judging panel stated. The award honors “the best book of the year written in English and printed in the united kingdom and Ireland.”
Atwood, 79, formerly won the trophy in 2000 for”The Blind Assassin,” and”The Testaments,” released last month, is the sequel to the Canadian writer’s bestselling 1985 book, “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
Evaristo, the first black woman to win the trophy, tells the tales of 12 characters, largely black and female aged 19 to 93, residing in Britain from”Girl, Woman, Other.”
While the prize was jointly awarded twice before, the rules changed in 1993 restricting the award to an author. The judges minding these principles, saying they couldn’t agree to a winner between the two novels, which have been about a shortlist of six.
We all expected to acquire this,” Atwood said in her acceptance speech at a regular ceremony.
“I’d have believed I would have been overly old and I sort of do not require the focus so I am very happy that you are getting some… It could have been embarrassing if I was lonely,” she stated to Evaristo.
Atwood has stated a deterioration in women’s rights in certain areas of the world such as in the USA motivated her to write the screenplay, called a”savage and lovely book” from the judging panel.
The bleak dystopian”The Handmaid’s Tale,” in which girls are prohibited from writing and reading and the fertile ones are pressured into sexual servitude, was nominated for the Booker Prize.
“That is outstanding. I guess a good deal of individuals say,’ I never believed it’d occur to me,’ and I shall say I’m the first black woman to win this trophy,” the British writer, 60, said to loud applause.
“I expect that honor does not last too long. I expect that other men and women come forward today,” she explained.
