Police say the distribution of controlled substances may occur more often than we think... but the consequences in the latest case show it can be very serious.

For 33–year–old Tamara Hill who police say shared her prescription drug with her friend Thomas Anderson. He later died from an overdose of Fentanyl.

Fairmont Police Chief Greg Brolsma says, "We hope that people throughout the community hear and know and understand the risks of that number one taking and number two providing these medications to their family and friends."

Now Hill is being charged with third–degree murder and could face up to 25 years in jail and or $40,000 in fines.

Chief Brolsma says... "The number of cases that we have where people overdose on drugs or other prescriptions is not uncommon by any stretch to the point where someone will die from it is a little less uncommon but still unfortunately is not a complete surprise."

Brittany Larson says... Here at Martin County Law Enforcement Center they are providing a public service called "Take It To The Box," which allows community members a safe disposal of medication, in order to prevent misuse of prescription drugs.

Chief Brolsma says... "We are finding too many people getting addicted to prescription pills and so it's an important program for us and we are hoping that this will make a difference in the community."

According to the Department of Human Services, 70 percent of the way people obtain prescription drugs is through a friend or relative...It's a statistic they hope to turn around and prevent something serious from happening.

Chief Brolsma says, "As this case tells us this is very dangerous... many of these drugs are dangerous now unfortunately a person has past on and a person will have to go through a very serious charge of murder."

Hill's next court appearance is set for next week.
