Local Business Leaders Don't Want Debt Ceiling Raised

Posted: Updated:

President Obama called on congress today to slashing spending and increasing revenue as part of a package to raise the nation's $14.3 trillion debt limit.

Business leaders in the Mankato area say spending cuts are necessary but strongly opposed the federal government raising its debt limit.

A survey of Great Mankato Growth members showed 63 percent of respondents said the debt ceiling should not be raised.

CEO of Greater Mankato Growth Jonathan Zierdt says the nations debt limit can be compared to a businesses line of credit.

Zierdt says "Any business that has a line of credit being extended to them by a bank or financier says I'm sorry we have given you all the credit we are going to, then as a business you have a choice, at that point you either figure out how to reduce your expenses and get under that debt limit and start to pay that back, or your business shuts down."

While the majority doesn't want the debt limit raised, almost all respondents – 93 percent — believe that if the government defaults on its debt, it would have serious consequences for the country's economy.

GMG conducted the survey at the request of U.S. Rep. Tim Walz's office.

They also shared the results with Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Sen. Al Franken.
