GARDEN CITY, Minn. -
A house fire in Garden City leaves a family of three looking for a place to spend the night.
The fire broke out after one o'clock this afternoon, and strong winds quickly engulfed the entire home.
A mother and her child were both inside when a fire neighbors say was caused by the wind began to destroy their home.
Franklin Richard Mullen says, "The neighbors and everyone said that they heard a pop. Must have been - sounded like it was from our TV antenna which had fallen over in the wind and hit the power lines."
Franklin Richard Mullen was at work in Mankato when he received the distressing call from his wife.
Mullen says, "She said the fire tanks just pulled up. I said you're 100% ok? She said yup, dogs are out and everything. I said well, not much we can do now except set back and watch her go..."
Crews from Lake Crystal and Good Thunder were on the scene battling the blaze, with the wind often engulfing firefighters in smoke, disappearing from sight. Neighbors attempted to put out the blaze early, but were overcome by smoke.
Mullen says, "It's an older house and I always thought about all the ways maybe an electrical fire or something could happen to the place. But you never would have though just a windy day was going to cause a power line to start a fire on your home. It's just one of the last things you think about."
A fund has been set up for the family at Community Bank in Vernon Center. Fellow neighbors have donated a crib and baby clothes for their young child while they try to sort everything out.
