Fair Trade Awareness

Posted: Updated:

A local organization is working to have the city of Mankato recognized as the first Fair Trade town in Minnesota.

Sarah Diel says, "I like the idea that the person that's doing the work is getting more of the profits than the big corporation."

That's the idea behind Fair Trade.

Not everyone is aware of Fair Trade so today these two volunteers are discussing the topic at Hilltop HyVee.

Displaying a basket full of fair trade items and serving up fair trade coffee samples.

Harlund Hansen of Mapleton says, "Pay them what their worth a lot of people get more than they're worth but some aren't getting enough."

The organization Known as MAFTI, Mankato Area Fair Trade Initiative, also has high hopes of having Mankato declared a Fair Trade Town.

Arlene Renshaw says, "We're close to that we've met all the criteria with the exception of getting a declaration of fair trade town status from the Mankato city council."

That would make Mankato the 25th Fair Trade Town in the nation.

Sarah Diel says, "I think that's really excellent and something to be really proud of and something I'd have bragging rights to."

Bragging rights to become one of the just over 1–thousand Fair Trade Towns in the world.

October is fair trade month.
