Law enforcement agencies are encouraging community members to dispose of their unused and unwanted medications. Rather than disposing your prescription medications at your own home, Fairmont Police Department, and Martin County Sheriff's office as well as several other law enforcement agencies are providing a service called "take it to the box" for National Take Back Initiative.
Take it to the box, a way for community members to dispose of their unwanted medications. Authorities say it's a great tool and helps them reduce the amount of prescription drugs on the streets and control the sharp rise in prescription drug abuse.
Chief Deputy Corey Klanderud says, "It gets them off the streets, it helps us reduce crime in those areas so it's just a win for both the community and law enforcement."
Its been about a year that the Fairmont Police Department and the Martin County Sheriff's office have provided what is called take it to the box, which is a tool for disposal not for investigation allowing anyone to drop off their unused and unwanted medications 24/7 with no questions asked.
Officer Jaime Bleess, "So if we can get people to drop off those unwanted ones even if they are not expired bring them to us drop them in our box and will dispose of them properly for you."
In the past year, they have collected over four 55-gallon barrels. Anything from old perceptions to common cold medicines can be dropped off in the box. But their main focus is getting prescriptions off the street, something that's good for the community and the environment, since authorities will dispose of the medications properly.
The D-E-A has scheduled another National Prescription Drug Take Back Day for those interested in disposing their unwanted medications. It will be on Saturday October 29th from 10a.m. -2p.m. at the North Mankato law enforcement center.
