Minnesota is home to some of the most beautiful rivers and lakes in the country but the recreational use of the water can come at a cost if people aren't safe.

Fire departments from Elysian, Waterville, and Madison Lake responded to the house fire around 7:00 last night.

The cause is still under investigation, however officials are considering the origin of the fire to be related to the wood burner or chimney that were operating at the time in the house."

The homeowner Ed Miller was not home at the time of the fire. Miller is now staying with relatives.

Chief Deputy Sheriff of Le Sueur County, Dave Tietz says, "Fortunately the owner of this home has other family member in the area and is staying with them."

The house on this property in rural Elysian was engulfed in flames and starting to collapse by the time fire crews arrived.

Officials say the cause of the fire could be related to the wood burner or chimney.
Deputy Dave Tietz says those types of fires aren't uncommon when the temperature starts to drop.

Tietz says, "Unfortunately in the winter time we do see more of these home because of the wood stoves and especially the chimneys that are not properly maintained."
Fire departments personnel and deputies determined Miller lived alone at the residence.

They were able to extinguish the fire involving the shed and garage, minimizing the damage of the structures.
