MANKATO, Minn. -
There have been 149 foreclosures in Blue Earth County through November of this year. That's down from the 184 in 2010, but higher than both 2008 and 2009, with still a month to go.
From a distance, the numbers don't look good. Lawyers that deal with foreclosures say the housing crisis isn't over yet, but the end is in sight.
Stacey Jones of Jones and Magnus Law Firm says, "There's a lot still in the pipeline for 2012. But 2013, it looks like you're going to flatten out a bit. Locally, things are a little bit better than the national average. We still have several in the pipeline but not as many new properties coming in that are distressed and in a foreclosure." Jones says her firm would typically see two or three foreclosure cases a quarter. Now they're seeing two or three per month. Still some argue that this spate of foreclosures could have positive effects on the rest of the economy.
Ryan McKeown of Wealth Enhancement Group says, "You really have to think about - when they're foreclosed on, now they don't have that mortgage any more. Yeah, that's not the ideal situation to have, but now they don't have that mortgage. Now they don't have that payment to make every month. Now maybe they can divert some of those funds they were paying toward their mortgage, toward other areas of the economy." McKeown adds that the foreclosures are merely the next step in the process of the economy fixing itself after the real estate bubble burst, and not necessarily a good barometer of the economy's health.
