A local company is turning farming waste into green technology. Agristrand is taking leftover soybean straws and compacting it into particle board and door cores.
Agristrand VP Dan Biller says, "They started looking at different Ag products that they could substitute for a wood fiber and finally settled on soy." After 8 years of research the company Agristrand found that soy is the closest matching agricultural product to wood. Making it the best thing to use when looking for a green alternative for particle board and door cores and they're setting up shop here in Mankato.
So what they'll actually be doing once manufacturing begins is turning these soy straw strands into door core, that goes right here in the center of your door. It's a tongue twister but certainly no joke. Agristrand expects 24/7 production and 60 new jobs to the area. It's a green idea that will be sustained by local farmers.
Agristrand President Tom Neel says, "We only need 25 to 35 thousand acres of fiber to supply this plant at this full production and within 75 mile radius of Mankato there's an excess of 1 million acres of soy." What they say is really great is farmers don't need any additional equipment, they just turn off the shredders in the back of the combine and everything that's left behind in the field is what they use. Agristrand President Tom Neel says, "So it's very plentiful. It has no market value, there is no established market for it but we are creating a market for it so it's a win-win for the farmers and everybody." They are also already talking to door companies that have expressed interested in buying their soy door cores.
Agristrand VP Dan Biller says, "It is great and it does contribute to lead points which is very important in the construction industry these days." Agristrand will also be using non-formaldehyde resin. Making the glue that holds everything together, emission free. Bringing business and a simple idea to the area. Local green products.
