149 years ago today 38 Dakota Indians were hung in Mankato.
It's a dark day in history but a group of American Indians are hoping to change that with a tradition that's about forgiveness.

The 330-mile ride started in South Dakota and ends here in Mankato... the site of the largest mass execution in America's history.
Miller says, "In the dream I see 38 of my ancestors being hung. The dream and I know that it came from the creator so I acted on it."
From Jim Miller's dream this ride was born... over 8 years ago.
Miller says, "our main goal is to do reconciliation."
Although the death of their ancestors is a difficult thing to accept they hope the ride helps with that reconciliation.
Peter Lengkeek says, "Those things that we felt take them use them in a GOOD WAY."
In the years since the ride began riders say they have felt more acceptance from communities along the route.
Miller says, "These kids came out and made signs little white kids. That said welcome Dakota 38 riders, in about every town that we stopped in so I know that the creator and I know that it's working."
A ceremony at Reconciliation Park included a wiping of the tears, where they prayed to release the spirits of their ancestors.
Lengkeek, "To be Dakota is to walk this earth in peace and harmony with all life."
Jim Miller says, "We hope that brothers and sisters and all colors all religions we can come together here today and pray together. And see what life we can make for our children."
Miller says his people have faced trying times and this is just one step in the healing process.
Miller says, "We are here to heal this country and this nation, and it takes everybody pink yellow red whatever it takes all of us."
Although the ride takes place once a year they hope to the reconciliation will benefit generations to come.

Along with the horseback riders a number of American Indians also ran from Fort Snelling to Mankato in honor of their ancestors.
