MADISON LAKE, Minn. -

It's been a slow-go for ice fishers and bait shops throughout the area, and the DNR is warning people to stay cautious when venturing out on the lake.

One portable icehouse reportedly went in on Madison Lake this past weekend.
That hasn't stopped dozens of others from getting out on the lake today.

Ryan White of White's Corner Bait in Madison Lake says, "Most of the guys are putting portable houses out versus the wheeled house, because of the ice conditions being variable. On certain lakes they range anywhere from three, way up to eight to nine inches."

White points out that there were similar ice conditions last year, when the heavy snow insulated the lakes, leading to weak ice as well.
He says it's best to play it safe.

White says, "Just caution when you do go out to the lake. The DNR is warning people to be familiar with the lake you're on. Check your ice depths with a chisel when you approach an area you're not familiar with."

In fact, there are a few places on the lake that still have open water.
