Each year one in every 100 Americans participates in one of the 5,000 American Cancer Society Relay for Life events across the globe. The Relay is their biggest event dedicated to raising funds for cancer research. News 12's Lisa Cownie introduces us to one woman leading those efforts locally.
Pat Hoehn uses her feet to fight cancer, but she knows she is not alone in the battle. She has participated in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life since 1999.
"In the fall of 2001, my sister passed away from cancer. I've lost a lot of family members and really close to friends to cancer," Pat says.
So she stepped up her efforts and has spent the last six years volunteering as the event co–chair.
Pat says, "If you've ever sat with anyone with cancer you know that you want to beat this disease, it's a horrible disease."
The relay is an all night vigil along a luminary–lit path to honor and memorialize those who's lives have been touched by cancer.
"Right now the only cure is chemo or radiation and before you come up you have to go down...that is what is so hard. That's why I fight, that's why I work hard," Pat says.

Over the years, Pat's relay team alone has raised $76,000 for cancer research.
