United Way Hits Fundraising Goal

MANKATO, Minn -

The Greater Mankato United Way has met their goal: $1.93 million raised for 2012 programs.

Funds came from a wide net of sources this year, with the average donation increasing as well.

The United Way's Barb Kaus says, "There's 200 businesses and over 7,400 individual givers that make up the 2012 campaign and that is really cool too, isn't it."

The United Way says they will be able to increase funding to needed programs like the backpack food program, girls on the run and in-school mentoring.

Mentor volunteer Patrick Van Osdel says, "It was very good to be able to hear stories about how these children the day after, the hour after meeting with their mentors, impacting their lives."

The United Way adds that the work they're doing is even more important now, when the economy is in rough shape.

The United Way's Laura Bowman says, "This is when non-profits need money the most because there's more of a need. There's less people working, there's people struggling financially. Gas prices are higher than they've been in my short life span. So when we truly need non-profits to be working their bests, it's during these times."
