Franken Hopes To Lower College Costs

MANKATO, Minn -

U.S. Senator Al Franken announced that he plans to focus on bringing down the cost of college for Minnesota families.

In 2010, student loan debt surpassed credit card debt among Americans for the first time. Franken says he is disheartened by the stories of families struggling to make attending college a reality or graduates saddled with debt.

MSU sophomore Anne Katchmark says, "I know for me I've questioned whether I should take a break from school, whether a semester or a whole year to see if I can make enough money to pay for the next semester, make it easier to catch up with my financial needs."

Franken plans to work on some of the key proposals that President Obama outlined, including holding colleges accountable for keeping costs down, rewarding innovative funding ideas, and increasing the transparency of college costs.
