SLEEPY EYE, Minn. - -
Sleepy Eye Public Schools is cashing in on old electronics. Today students were recycling old computers and projectors to name a few.
In Sleepy Eye, faculty called an audible to today's lesson plan.
"Came out for class and then the teacher told us we were going to box some stuff up," said Brandon Martinez, Sleepy Eye Public Schools senior.
Students began recycling obsolete electronics to make way for new equipment.
"We don't need them anyway, so might as well do something with them," said junior Collin Trebesch.
From old computers to outdated phone such as this one, students say it feels good to help their school go green and make a difference in the community.
"It's kind of fun just helping the world out you know," said Trebesch. "We're a small town, we can still make a difference though."
Martinez says he agrees.
"For the economy and everything not doing so great...everybody is going green, and it's just something little that we can do," Martinez said.
Faculty members say the electronics are being shipped for free and that the school district gets 10 percent of the total value in return. Around 200 computers along with more than a dozen TVs were prepped for shipping.
"We couldn't find a better deal and what a better way to help our earth and help us out because most schools as you know are in budget crisis," said Mary Maas, Sleepy Eye Public Schools I.T. assistant.
Bottom line, students say it feels good to make a difference.
"Usually they'd just throw them away, but we're going to recycle them," said Trebesch.
But there is an added bonus to recycling as well.
"At least I get to miss class, that's the main thing," said Martinez.
School spokespeople say old electronics will be shipped to New York and recycled out.
