USDA Aiming To Close Waseca Office

WASECA, Minn. -

The United States Department of Agriculture is proposing to shut down a number of Farm Service Agency (FSA) offices across Minnesota.

One of those lies in Waseca. On Wednesday, farmers gathered to give their thoughts to officials.

The workplace may look like just an ordinary office, but farmers say it's a critical part to their operations.

"The service has been second to none," said farmer Neil Schlaak

Linda Hennen of the USDA says the move is due to financial reasons. She adds the Waseca office meets the consolidation criteria with only 2 people and another FSA office located within 20 miles.

"We're really not going to know until April until the proposal becomes a reality," Hennen said.

Some farmer's say the USDA'S proposal to shut down the office is the wrong move.

"The relationship is something that you don't replace," said Schlaak. "They know you as a person, they treat you like a person, rather than a number."

Sandy Hendrickson used to work at the Waseca office. She says the USDA's proposal would hurt farmers.

"I think it's a terrible idea, this is a very large agricultural idea," Hendrickson said.

USDA officials say the earliest possible shutdown date for the Waseca FSA office is July 1st of this year.
