MANKATO, Minn. -
The 4-day school week will soon be coming to the Sleepy Eye school district, after the board voted unanimously for the measure last night.
The district still needs approval from the state before the switch, but parents and teachers appear to be looking forward to the change already.
Pending the go-ahead from the state, Sleepy Eye will switch to a Tuesday through Friday school week.
That means a longer day for students, and potential headaches as parents figure out what to do with their kids on Mondays.
Parent and President of the PTSA, Sarah Lendt says, "I was on the committee making some site visits and talking to parents in the communities that are doing the 4-day week. That really comforted me. I think it'll be a good thing and I'll get to have my kids on that Monday and it'll be good."
Maria Gonzalez says, "Sometimes after the weekend on Mondays, the kids drag on Mondays, cause it's Monday. So maybe that extra day for them to rest and do homework will be a good thing too."
Sports schedules will be impacted as well, as Sleepy Eye will have to balance their schedules with schools with a five-day week.
Sleepy Eye Elementary teacher and High School coach, Scott Hadley says, "Since the longer day, the nights will go longer for the sports too, into the evening. Basically a longer school day, shorter night for especially the sports kids. And the scheduling for the athletic director, he probably has the toughest job as far as figuring out bus departure times, getting out of school early."
Sleepy Eye expects the change will save the district about 85 thousand dollars a year.
And students are looking forward to it as well.
Jacob says, "It's better than 5-day school week because we get off Monday or Friday."
Who doesn't like a three-day weekend.
