ST. PAUL, Minn. -
A hundred or so area leaders and business people make their way up to the Capitol to lobby the Legislature.
The big ticket item this year once again is an expansion of the Mankato Civic Center.
The city of Mankato is hoping for about $15 million, half of the estimated cost that will bring the MSU women's hockey program to the Verizon Wireless Center, and expand convention opportunities.
The city and university have had the project on their wish list for several years, and they're hoping that in a year absent of budget deficits, they'll finally get that wish.
MSU President Dr. Richard Davenport says, "I'm fairly confident that legislators are going to hear our story. I think the question will be 'is the bonding bill going to be large enough to accommodate city projects like ours?' I'm hopeful that if one city project gets funded ours will also, and I think we have an excellent story to tell there."
The area delegation is hearing that Republicans are looking at a bonding bill in the area of $500 million, significantly less than Governor Dayton's proposed $775 million.
Mankato's addition to the states metropolitan area list is the major selling point for those at the Capitol today, a designation they did not have in the past.
Mankato City Councilman-at-large Mike Laven says, "What we're doing well in Mankato does have an impact on the state economy and we want to let them know that we're helping that and we want to let them know that Mankato... we're at the big kids table. We're no longer segregated to the other room; we're up there with Minneapolis, St. Paul, Duluth, Rochester, St. Cloud."
The Mankato lobbying group is also pushing for additional facilities on the MSU campus, and for the 4-lane expansion of highway 14 from Mankato to New Ulm.
