MANKATO, MN -

In a recent citizen survey, Mankato residents noted the beauty of the city as one of their favorite things. In tonight's Lisa Lights, she introduces us to one woman helping the city maintain that beauty.

The park nestled at the intersection of Broad and Warren streets...hasn't always been there. "There were some trees, no walls, but no plants..." In 1988 Malda Farnham started with a seemingly tiny plot and watched it grow from there. "There are times I've wanted to quit, but no way the city would have time to do the things I do. So I"ve stayed on and its good for the ol body." Motorists passing by might not notice..."I spend a lot more time here than anyone needs to do." But Malda knows others stopping here enjoy the fruits of her labor. "When I arrived here this afternoon there was a lady on that bench enjoying lunch, and a man over there exercising." City officials say Malda and volunteers like her grow more than just gardens they grow a sense of community. Parker says, ".We allow citizens to take ownership of their community, and that is important"  Malda Farnham, one of Lisa's Lights. The city is always looking for volunteers to help maintain those public spaces, like Malda's park, if you would like to get involved, contact the city of Mankato.
