The last time this building was occupied full-time by grades 4th-6th was the 2009 and 2010 school year. Since closing its doors, the school district saved $190,000.
Superintendent, Dick Orcutt says, "It was nice to have, we utilized the whole building but at the same time we knew we were capable of hosting everything at one sight, and it was a financial decision."
The Waldorf School building has been vacant for two years, but now that the JWP school board decided to sell it for $1 to the Southern Minnesota Chamber of Commerce. Their goal is to turn it into a charter school for grades 10th, 11th, and 12th.
Orcutt says, "Their design is that they are going to have an alternative learning center at the sight, with real hands on type of organizations promoting welding, wood programs these types of things."
Their projected date for the alternative learning center to open is the in fall of 2013. Their goal is to help prepare High School students for successful transitions into careers of all kinds.
Orcutt says, "Our hope is that the ALC program in Waldorf will flourish and the programming produce good quality workers for all of the private sectors that's going to be investing in it."
The district spent close to $70,000 each year just to keep the pipes from freezing. But they're officially off the hook.
The school board says they don't see a drastic increase in enrollment happening in the immediate future, and should have enough space for the time being
