Gas Leak Causes Fire At South Bend Township Home

Posted: Updated:

Five people are displaced after a fire broke out at a South Bend Township home.

Officials say the fire occurred at 306 South Bend Avenue. The home  didn't sustain significant exterior damage, but the inside is a different story.

The township's assistant fire chief said the fire started from a gas leak that occurred Friday night. After smelling gas, the family evacuated and returned Saturday.

That's when they smelled smoke and called authorities.

"It actually burned through a plastic water pipe, "said Asst. Chief Mike McGowan of the South Bend Township Fire Department. "And the fire was put out by that leaking water pipe--it was unbelievable."

Officials say the blaze caused at least $50,000 in damage.
