Along with fireworks filling the air, motorists will be filling roadways to reach their Fourth of July destinations.

On Wednesday, health and law enforcement officials held a joint press conference at Mayo Clinic Health System-Mankato to remind drivers to use common sense when hitting the road this Independence Day.

Physicians are reminding celebrators to keep the party at their destination and not carry it over onto highways.

"We see a lot of accidental trauma, especially in those folks 35 and younger," said Brian Bartlett, M.D. of Mayo Clinic Health System. "The lion's share of this is due to poor decision making, and unfortunately drinking and driving."

Last year alone, officials say there were over 1,600 crashes resulting in 13 deaths just in Blue Earth and Nicollet Counties. That's why the State Patrol is asking motorists to drive safe and smart.

"The entire goal and the message I want to give today is voluntary compliance is key," said Capt. Lori Hodapp-Betterton of the Minnesota State Patrol.

Doctors at Mayo Clinic Health System-Mankato say extra emergency room staff will be on hand to deal with an expected influx of incidents this Fourth of July.
