Hockey Association Looking To Community For More Ice

MANKATO, Minn. -

The Mankato area has two ice rinks, but those that use them say they are in desperate need of more.

That is why the Mankato Area Hockey Association is looking to the community to help build two new rinks by the 2014 season.

The association has its eyes set on a piece of city –owned land near the Caswell Park softball complex in North Mankato.

MAHA chairman of expansion and growth Marcus Peterson says, "We look at 10 acres there and that would be a perfect spot for 2 rinks for us, there are a lot of users that are in our association that are from North Mankato and right now the rinks are on the opposite side of town, if we were able to have couple rinks on one side and a couple rink on the other I think it would be a good fit."

24 groups, from kids to college students and adult players currently share the ice.

And even with two teams sharing the ice simultaneously and using rinks in New Ulm and Madison Lake, the association's teams are getting 600 fewer hours of practice time than recommended by the US Hockey Development Association.
