It's the first official look from the city at Monday night's work session regarding plans for a permanent location for Children's Museum of southern Minnesota. So far they have raised half of their $4 million goal.

This might just be a temporary location but the Children's Museum of Southern Minnesota has seen visitors from 33 different counties and four different states. All the more reason why museum staff say they desire a permanent home.

Children's Museum of Southern Minnesota Executive Director Peter Olson says, "In communities a museum becomes such a beloved resource and that's why they are the most popular segment of the entire culture sector so we are just so excited to bring this amenity and an educational resource to Mankato and southern Minnesota."

The Children's Museum of Southern Minnesota has been in Mankato for about eight years at temporary locations. Now their next step is to request support from the city and to start campaigning for a permanent location next to the Blue Earth County Library.

Olson says, "Whatever the council decided we are still going to be a great partner with them."
Some city council member said it's a difficult decision on what worthy organizations receive funding.

However they did take notice to the examples of successful children's museums and how the city played a key role.

City Council Member Mike Laven says, "Looking at some of the other communities what they are putting in what they did put in a minimum threshold to be able to put in $250,000 and see a great value at bare minimum.

Once the city works out a new budget they mentioned having a discussion on how they could participate.

If the museum staff gets the green light they are hoping to break ground in the spring of 2013 and have it be completed by winter.
