The dry hot weather is prompting Nicollet and Blue Earth Counties to authorize emergency haying and grazing use of CRP acres.
USDA County Executive Director Cassia Buck says, "I think the greatest benefit will be to livestock producers those that are short on hay because we haven't had enough rain to pastor are in poor condition because we haven't had enough rain to keep them up. This gives them a viable option to hopefully maintain some extra hay out there."
Not all contracts will qualify. Any haying or grazing of CRP must be pre–approved by the County FSA. All CRP acres used will have a 10 percent payment reduction. The emergency authorization becomes effective on August 2. Haying must be complete by August 31 and all bales or stacks removed by September 15.
