MANKATO, MN -

When Lutheran Social Services opened The Reach a year and a half ago, and a growing number of youth are making it a part of their daily lives. The Reach is a drop–in shelter for youth in need.  Lisa's Lights focuses on one volunteer helping The Reach meet the need.

Barry Marston says,  "I was looking for opportunity to get outside of myself." Barry found that opportunity  at The Reach.

"Its for kids who are homeless, living on the streets or have difficult home situations and just need a place to be able to go to be safe and feel safe." But for the youth it serves, The Reach provides so much more than shelter. Barry says, "It's a lot of fun to see young people who, irrespective of very difficult situations dealing with they still have energy, hope and still want to do things and aspire to accomplish things in their lives."

As a volunteer, Barry has many roles at the Reach such as sorting, guiding, encouraging. He says,  "The most fun is getting to know these kids and realizing the power of the human spirit. The self reliance they have  is inspiring. The fact that they live through very difficult things and still laugh, smile, and be regular kids and all they are asking for is a little help with food, a place to stay, a ride somewhere."

All things the Reach can offer them and its all because of volunteers like Barry, one of Lisa's Lights.
