The Verizon Wireless Center in Mankato has survived the first round in the contest for state bonding money.

State officials are evaluating projects for a $47.5 million pool for state grants.

They've been scoring projects on a point system based on project readiness, job creation regional benefits and other factors.

Mankato officials are requesting 14.5 million dollars for upgrades to the center, including a hockey arena for the MSU women's team.

Out of a possible 100 points, the project scored a 63.

The Department of Employment and Economic Development eliminated more than half the 90 applications it received.

Money for fiber optics installation in Sibley and Renville Counties, and two projects in Marshall did not make the cut.

Gov. Dayton is expected to announce his final picks this week.
