More people avoiding the pharmacy counter to save cash

Millions of Americans are avoiding the pharmacy counter, even when they need prescription-strength medication.

CBS is reporting 45 percent of adults under age 65 skipped getting a prescription in order to save cash.

Here in Mankato, a pharmacist at Hy-Vee told News 12 customer traffic in the pharmacy department has stayed about the same. However, more people are opting for lower-priced generic brands.

"Depends on the exact drug, but usually a pretty substantial cost savings," said pharmacist Brian Cornelius as he spoke about generic-brand meds. "You know I would say at least 25 percent for something that's brand new that just came out...I mean it can be quite a substantial difference, even 80 percent."

In addition to rising drug prices, a national study also revealed 62 percent of people under age 65 skipped a medical test because of cost.
