North Mankato Not Releasing Decision on Sober House

Posted: Updated:

Concerned neighbors and the owner of the Bell House Sober House in North Mankato will have to wait for a decision from the council on just how many people can live in that home.

City leaders Monday night saying they have made their decision, all five in fact putting that decision in writing, signing a letter drawn up by City Attorney Michael Kennedy.

The documents are public record, but the yes and no tally is not yet public. That's because Monday night was not a regular city council meeting, but instead an accommodation hearing with the council acting as a panel of judges.

The residence in question: a North Mankato home at 2107 Northridge Drive.

Neighbors want no more than six people to live at the home for women overcoming addiction, as is state statue.

Belle House's owner is asking for a limit of eight.

Paul Grabitske, the attorney for Belle House, LLC., says, "I'm fairly confident your capable city staff would have told us to go take it to where it needs to go. We're here for a reason. The ball's in your court. We just ask that you take a look at the facts and evidence in front of you and grant the reasonable accommodation."

The council members' decision will be released by next Monday night's council meeting or before.
