MANKATO , MINN. -
The Verizon Wireless Civic Center expansion may not have made the cut for state bonding money, but Mankato City Manager Pat Hentges says there is still hope for the center. Hentges says, " I think what seems to be an issue that we really have to address with the legislature is that we are the only convention center the only event center and only major arena in the state of Minnesota that has not had funding participation by the state."
A meeting is planned this month at the capital to discuss possible funding options for the civic center, other than simply raising the local option sales tax. Hentges says, "I really think the city and the state along with Minnesota State have to kind of come up with a plan that fits everybody's needs and come up with a funding mechanism that doesn't rely totally on local option sales tax."
According to Hentges the city has just under $18 million from the local option sales tax to fund the estimated $30 million dollar expansion.
