MANKATO , MINN. -

Republican Allen Quist is demanding an apology from incumbent Congressman Tim Walz after last week's first district congressional debate.

According to Quist, Walz accused him of having said he wanted to cut veterans benefits.

However, Quist says that is not true.

"I am an individual that cannot tolerate things on the table that are not true," said Quist in a Tuesday morning press conference.

The issue is over a statement Quist made back in April during a primary debate with state Senator Mike Parry.

The question asked dealt with entitlement spending and whether candidates would cut entitlements.

Quist says in the clip he never directly stated he would cut benefits to veterans and says his words have been taken out of context.

"The accusation made by Tim Walz has shown to be without verification and therefore without merit," Quist said.

Despite the demand by Quist for a public apology, Tim Walz's campaign staff say the congressman has no intention of saying he's sorry on this issue.

"Tim Walz will never apologize for standing up for veterans and their families; this isn't about Mr. Quist's feelings," said Tony Ufkin, Tim Walz's press secretary.

Congressman Walz himself was unavailable for comment.
