Hookah smoking on the rise

Posted: Updated:

There's mixed news to report about smoking and college students.

According to a new study, smoking by college students has declined since 2006. But at the same time, waterpipe or hookah smoking has increased significantly, by about 20 percent for non-cigarette smokers in the same demographic.

That news has health experts concerned for two reasons. One of them being higher levels of carbon monoxide that comes from using hookahs.

"The second thing is it's done in a social setting...the tube for the pipe is passed from person to person to person, which means you're going to increase infectious diseases," said Rich Peller, M.D. of Mankato Clinic.

Health experts say hookah smoking carries more risk than traditional smoking.
