NEW ULM, Minn. -
Fire danger is at an all time high, and the DNR is urging the public to take caution.
The drought plaguing our area has made prairie grasses, dry leaves, and crops good fuel for wild fires.
Plus our current dry, windy conditions can lead to really easy to start, rapidly spreading wildfires if precautions are not taken.
Tom Romaine with the MN DNR says, "For example today, if we had a fire in tall grass like cat–tails, or un harvested corn that fire could spread up to the length of a football field and a half in the space of a minute."
The DNR says it is best to hold off on burning your ditches or the growing pile of leaves on the lawn even small bonfires can easily get out of control.
For farmers in the field, proper machinery care is crucial. Farm fires are often started by overheated parts and unclean equipment.
Fires aren't recommended anywhere, but if you are in Steele county they are restricted…the Sheriff has issued a complete burning ban, including camp fires.
