ST. PETER, MINN. -
In 1862, a Swedish immigrant pastor opened a small school with a student body of just one. Now 150 years later and approximately 2,600 additional students, Gustavus Adolphus College celebrates its Sesquicentennial. Former student Willis Lindquist says, "It's just a great thing I mean 150 years if you think about it from nothing to this."
Current students, alumni, and some Swedish royalty all gather on this gusty day to reflect on the past, present and future of this school. Gustavus Adolphus College Matt Thomas says, "Well we are the oldest Lutheran college in Minnesota so I think that's something to be proud of so you know the last 150 years have been great and this year we've basically been preparing for the next 150 years at Gustavus."
And a permanent plaza dedicated to the past 150 years. One of the most prominent features here at the plaza is the sculpture. This 16–foot tall structure represents each college year with a new layer and turn light the spiral of a seashell." U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar says, "Well I think I like the I love the sculpture I think that's really cool and of course the timeline is just one of those things you love to when it's a little warmer and look at each thing and what happened at each year and that's a great part of it."
Starting at Christ Chapel the timeline counts down the 150 years highlighting the history of the school. Klobuchar says, "When you think about it students and people from the community will see this for years to come and so its just really really nice to be a part of it."
