Three Mankato city council members and the Blue Earth County election director are coming out publicly against the Voter ID amendment.

Organized by Take Action Minnesota, council members Mike Laven, Karen Foreman and Jack Considine, along with Patty O'Connor from the county, all oppose the ballot measure.

Jack Considine says, "Our republic works best when everybody participates – this amendment causes too many restrictions on the ability to vote."

"It will cost over $300,000 to the city of Mankato if this passes," adds Foreman. "That's the equivalent to about 20% of our snow plow budget or four or five public safety officers."

Supporters counter that the amendment is needed to prevent voter fraud at the ballot box.

The latest opinion polls show Minnesotans supporting the Voter ID amendment 52–44 percent.
