Pheasant Phest Recruits Young Hunters

MADELIA, Minn. -

With pheasant hunting season less than a week away the city of Madelia is getting old and new hunters into shooting shape at the fourth annual Pheasant Phest. Bill McMullen enjoys shooting the clay pigeons, but he says hunting wild animals is where the real challenge is. McMullen says, "Well the game they don't play fair, they run too fast they hide deep."

The only thing more challenging is hunting for new recruits. McMullen says, "Well the youth now a days likes to sit at home with the video games ipods and everything and they need to get involved in the outdoors."

City administrator Dan Madsen says, the hunting community needs more young hunters to continue the sport. Madsen says, "I think the future of hunting depends on the youth its nice to try to get people out from ipads and video games and doing something outdoors."

He says this event is a great opportunity to recruit new hunters and give them a few pointers. 13–year–old  Duncan Osborn started shooting about a year ago. Osborn says, "If you haven't done it to come out and try it, it's a lot of fun out here."

Some shoot for fun, while others shoot for bragging rights. But today they all came for the same reason. McMullen says, "An opportunity to shoot."
